Why Collision Coverage and Rental Reimbursement Are Two of the Most Important Parts of Your Auto Insurance Policy

When most people think about auto insurance, they focus on liability coverage — the part that protects them if they injure someone else. And while liability coverage is legally required in Connecticut and critically important, there are two optional coverages that many drivers skip in an effort to save a few dollars each month: collision coverage and rental reimbursement.
As personal injury attorneys, we see firsthand what happens when people are involved in accidents — and we can tell you that skipping these coverages is a decision many of our clients wish they could take back.

What Is Collision Coverage?
Collision coverage pays to repair or replace your own vehicle when it is damaged in an accident, regardless of who was at fault. If you rear-end another car, slide on ice and hit a guardrail, or get sideswiped in a parking lot, collision coverage is what fixes your car.
Without it, you are left with two difficult options:
1. Hope the other driver’s liability insurance covers your damage. This only works if the other driver was at fault and has sufficient coverage. In Connecticut, the minimum property damage liability limit is just $25,000 — which may not come close to covering the cost of a newer vehicle.
2. Pay out of pocket. A moderate collision can easily result in $5,000–$15,000 in vehicle damage, or more. For many families, that kind of expense is simply not manageable.
Collision coverage removes that uncertainty. You pay your deductible, your insurer handles the rest, and you get back on the road.

What Happens When the Other Driver Doesn’t Have Enough Insurance?
This is where things get complicated — and where we see clients in real distress.
Connecticut requires drivers to carry auto insurance, but not everyone complies, and even those who do may carry only the state minimum. If the at-fault driver is uninsured or underinsured, their policy may not fully cover your vehicle damage. Without collision coverage on your own policy, you could be left fighting to recover from a driver who has little to nothing to offer.
Collision coverage means you are not dependent on the negligence of an uninsured stranger to get your car repaired. You are protected regardless of the other driver’s situation.

What Is Rental Reimbursement Coverage?
Rental reimbursement coverage — sometimes called rental car coverage — pays for a temporary rental vehicle while your car is being repaired after a covered accident. Policies typically reimburse a set daily amount (commonly $30–$50/day) up to a maximum total benefit.
It sounds simple, but its value becomes very clear the moment you actually need it.

Why Rental Coverage Matters More Than People Realize
Most people assume that if another driver caused the accident, that driver’s insurance will provide them with a rental car. Sometimes that is true — but often it is not that straightforward.
Here are a few scenarios we see regularly:
• Liability is disputed. The other driver’s insurance company is not going to hand over a rental car while they are still investigating who was at fault. That investigation can take days or weeks. Without rental coverage on your own policy, you may have no transportation in the meantime.
• The other insurer drags their feet. Insurance companies are businesses. Delay tactics are common. Your rental coverage ensures you are not held hostage to another company’s timeline.
• You are in a single-car accident. If you hit a patch of black ice, a deer, or a road hazard, no other driver’s insurance is coming to help. Rental coverage on your own policy fills that gap.
• Your car is totaled. Even after an insurer agrees your car is a total loss, it often takes time to process the payout and for you to find a replacement vehicle. Rental coverage keeps you mobile during that window.

The Real Cost of Going Without
Let’s put this in practical terms. Suppose you are in an accident that was not your fault, your car needs three weeks of repair, and the at-fault driver’s insurer is slow to accept liability. A basic rental car in Connecticut typically runs $40–$70 per day. Over three weeks, that is anywhere from $840 to $1,470 out of your pocket — for an accident you did not cause.
Rental reimbursement coverage, by contrast, typically adds only $5–$15 per month to your premium. The math is not complicated.

What We Tell Our Clients
When someone calls our office after a motor vehicle accident, one of the first things we ask about is their insurance coverage. Time and again, the clients who fare best in the aftermath of a collision — financially and logistically — are the ones who had comprehensive coverage on their own vehicle.
Carrying collision and rental coverage is not pessimism. It is preparation. Accidents are, by definition, unexpected. The drivers who recover most smoothly are those who made thoughtful decisions long before the crash happened.

A Few Tips Before You Review Your Policy
• Check your deductible. A higher deductible lowers your premium but increases your out-of-pocket cost after an accident. Make sure your deductible is an amount you could realistically pay on short notice.
• Review your rental limits. Some rental reimbursement policies have low daily caps. Make sure your daily limit is enough to cover a comparable rental in today’s market.
• Ask about Uninsured/Underinsured Motorist coverage too. While we are talking about gaps in protection, UM/UIM coverage is another critical layer that protects you if the at-fault driver cannot fully compensate you for your injuries and losses.
